who takes your blog photos?

Friday, January 18, 2013

My husband takes mine, though somewhat reluctantly, truth be told. Lately I've been thinking that behind every great blog is a partner who's been roped into being an unofficial photographer.

And I'm not even a style blogger! I honestly don't understand how style bloggers get such great photos day in, day out. Are they all married to photographers? Or do their partners just really enjoy having stumbled into their roles as accidental fashion photographers?

My husband doesn't particularly like taking photos, so generally I have to ask very nicely, set up the shot I want with him playing model, then quickly swap. I also have this unfortunate habit of becoming incredibly self-conscious if there's anyone around while we're taking photos. And living in a big city, there is always someone around! This has been particularly true the few times we've taken bump photos. On this day, for example, I was hungry, tired, and hot but I still insisted on getting some quick shots. I was also feeling super awkward because there were people everywhere, so it was no surprise that within 5 minutes I was snapping at my poor husband. He really is a good sport.

So I'm curious... who takes your blog photos? And do they like doing it? Do you get embarrassed when there are people watching you have your photo taken? Or do you like playing model?

Edited to add: I just wanted to clear up 2 things... I take all of the photos on my blog with the exception of the ones that I'm in. My husband takes those. He also wanted me to point out that I don't always set up shots for him; he does a lot more than I gave him credit for. Fair point :)

p.s. I'm going to see David Byrne & St. Vincent tonight, so excited!

  1. St. Vincent! I have the biggest girl crush on Annie Clark. I bet it will be a great show. Make sure to tell husband that we appreciate him taking your photos, and they look great. ;)

  2. My friends did it but the shot never came out as I envisioned it! :( I do feel uncomfortable in front of the camera, to be honest. I rather take pictures of other people!

  3. The majority of images are taken by me...and often I am not the subject.
I feel VERY awkward having my photograph taken...which is strange considering I've spent much of my life performing on stage and in front of the camera. I think after studying photography/design I feel more critical of how I appear in an image.

If there is an image of me on the blog, it is usually taken by Sam - though she is an wonderful photographer and is (usually) more than happy to humour me.

  4. I have always wondered who takes these amazing photos of fashion bloggers, and if they are unwilling pawns. I actually married a photographer, and yet I still feel bad asking him to take pictures. He is the one telling me not to worry about people being around, etc. He loves what he does, and it works to my benefit, so we make a great team. I am grateful.

  5. Me. My husband gets frustrated with me. My gorgeous twelve year old has been putting her hand up to do it. X

  6. I'm always the one behind the camera, or using the tripod if I'm in the photo.

I've learned it's just easier ;) Sometimes I get embarrassed when we go to locations to shoot some photos, but then I think I have these treasures. These photos and, really, I don't care what others think!

Glad I just discovered your blog. It's lovely! New follower.

  7. i'm glad to hear someone else say this too, i always wondered if fashion blogger's husbands are just overjoyed to take their pics. my husband will occasionally take pics for me, but same as you i have to ask nicely and there is sometimes grumbling ;) i did just get a tripod for xmas though!

  8. I take 99% of the photos, but the photos with me in them? That's trickier...and I'm not much of a tripod self timer gal. So I'm attempting go get a different person each week to take my bump photos which, three weeks in, is going well! At least til I run out of friends :)

My husband is always my back up, but like yours he isn't super keen! And I get really self conscious as well which doesn't help.

  9. My boyfriend, who was not a photographer before the blog, takes them. He is sometimes reluctant but gets into it and has proven to have an incredible eye for portrait photos.

  10. First of all, for a husband who does not like to take photographs, he does a great job. I've had all of the above issues. My husband hates taking the photos, not because he hates photography, it's quite the opposite. I know how to work my camera, so I get picky and snappy and annoyed. I also get very irritated because I feel like no one knows how to get the right angles. So for the longest time I stuck to taking photographs and never really posting any of myself. BUT as of late, I have teamed up with a close friend who happens to be a great photographer and we have been helping each other out. The down side to that is, she's not always around.

  11. I have often wondered who takes the photographs of all the fashion bloggers ... I hate having my photo taken so I usually avoid it like the plague! But for a reluctant photographer, your husband does a fab job :)

  12. this is a lot of the reason I take so few outfit photos! when I'm with Jon, I ask him to - but he HATES it. he'll take a few really fast and then say OKAY WE'RE DONE LET'S GO! strangely, my dad is really getting into being my photographer! I'm living at home now so it's the easiest thing, but he's really playing along - the last few times he asked for pictures of himself too :)

  13. Steeeeeeeve. He's the man behind the photos. And, he actually doesn't mind, but I think it's because he used to be semi into photography.

But yeah, some of those fashion bloggers and their perfect pics. I'm like, "DID YOUR HUSBAND GO TO PHOTOGRAPHY SCHOOL BECAUSE HIS WIFE WAS A BLOGGER?" The pics are real good is what I'm saying. Duh.

  14. such a funny post! I love it, and it's interesting to think about the real work behind every one of those pretty posts we see.
I don't have anyone take my photos- but then, I'm not usually in my photos a lot either. maybe I should rethink this.....

  15. Same as Lou - I'm mainly the one with camera in hand unless I'm in the photo! All bump photos have been by hubby :)

  18. I take most of my photos, but lately my fiance has helped me in taking any portraits. He is surprisingly excited about it, so I feel lucky!

  19. i take most of my blog photos because it is still mostly about Lily, our three year old daughter and our lives. when i do want to get those fashion posts in, i will ask my husband and if my good friend Darren is around, he is a great candidate also. but, it's hard being on the other side of the lens...

  20. i feel extremely uncomfortable in front of the camera and even more uncomfortable when there are people around. i'm not a natural and it usually takes several shots until i'm truly happy with the results. the boyfriend is more than willing to take photos, but to be honest he gets extremely annoyed when i try to direct him and try to control every shot. for now, i think it's better if i stay behind the camera :)

  21. I wonder the same thing about fashion bloggers, they must have partner's in crime to help them out - otherwise I think we'd see less photos of them out and about.
I take pretty much all my own photos, but, if I want to show off some wearable, I'll generally get one of my sisters (both keen photographers!). I do take the odd self portrait, though. :)

  22. haha i love your little clarification. my hubby takes me photos of me and he's a pretty good sport about it...but i don't do many photos of myself like that. getting him to be in the photos?! he HATES it. i also get extremely shy, i don't want anyone near me when i'm getting my photo taken in public.

  23. Veeery interesting! You always look lovely in your photos, so credit to your husband there.

I take all of mine (badly) unless I'm in them, which is rare, and then I make my husband do it. He's hopeless and I become all controlling and horrid. And self conscious. So, not so many photos of me on my blog, which is better for all concerned I think!

  24. My husband is the same way, except he doesn't seem to mind so much after quite a few beers. So I take my outfit photos myself, and, I honestly do feel a bit self-absorbed taking photos of myself, even though I do feel self-conscious of my own imperfections. It's strange how that is....-Jessica L

  25. It does take a special person (or a tripod) to take style photos for fashion bloggers day in and day out. And about getting embarrassed taking blog photos while people are walking around...just try filming a vlog in a crowded area. Talk about awkward and hilarious.

  26. that is really cool and interesting that he takes your blog photos, i love that gaby! I take mine, although my husband should, because he's amazing at it. i have a lot of growing to do!

  27. aw, listen, your husband is proud of his work!

  28. Kyle takes most of mine, he kind of likes it actually and has become really good! He even shoots on Manual with my Canon... took me years to learn that! =)

  29. i think most style bloggers use a remote and tripod - either my husband takes mine or i have a blogging friend who lives 3 minutes away and we get together once a week and usually snap a few pictures ... she's great!

  31. I have to agree. Behind the blog, there has to be a photographer. I take all the photos on my blog (however few and far between they may be) but I struggle with asking for ones of me... Something I'm working on. The mirror is a great friend too!
