my black apple doll and gender predictions

Thursday, December 6, 2012

On Tuesday night I all of a sudden had an urge to be productive and make something. So what did I spend the next 2 hours making?

A doll.

Yup. Probably the least useful thing I could've made, and yet, it made me undeniably happy. I've said it before and I'll say it again - starting with a bunch of scraps and ending up with something pretty never ceases to amaze me. I followed this tutorial from Emily Martin of The Black Apple, and then added a cape and a mask based on this doll.

I did, of course, think about the baby growing in my belly and wonder whether this doll could be for him/her. I know you're not supposed to say this, but to be perfectly honest, I would LOVE to have a girl. All the names I like are girls names (and I can't think of any boys names!) and I'm just a pretty girly gal myself. Dolls, dress up, sewing... that's a language I speak! Both husband and I are convinced though, and have been from the start, that it's a boy. And we're not finding out; we I want the surprise :)

  1. Can I make my own prediction? Based on inability to come up with any boy names, you are absolutely 100% having a boy. Hehe. That's exactly how it went for me. I also trust Mama's intuition. I read somewhere that expectant mothers guessed the gender correctly 70% of the time. I'm not sure how accurate or official that is but I believe it. I just knew my boy was a boy from about 6 weeks on. We also had to fight tooth and nail to find a single Boys name we agreed on yet for girls... We have several names we both love and adore. Go figure.

  2. Wow. She's gorgeous. I love her little mask and cape.

For my first I was certain I was having a boy – and I did. For my second I was certain I was having a second boy – and was completely surprised when I had a little girl. I think girls name are easier too – there are so many beautiful girls names.

  3. I so wish I knew how to sew. This is adorable, Gaby!

As for the baby, I'm going to guess girl. Just because. :)

P.S. I also meant to e-mail you yesterday and the night before, because in my comment about your birthday and the weather, I said that you were from America. Obviously, that is incorrect. I know that, and I'm not really sure what made me type America. Oops! :/ Just had to throw it out there that I read every single post, and I KNOW where you're from. :)

  4. Awesome dolls!
Something interesting I learned about guessing your child's sex when my sister was pregnant with her second: there have actually been studies that show if your oldest child is younger than about 3 years old, they can almost always predict the sex of your child. According to her doctor, there have actually been studies done and the older sibling (if younger than about 3) is even statistically more accurate than the doctors and the ultrasounds. Her doctor actually told her to ask her son if he was having a brother or sister. And he said boy and he was right!

So anyway... there's a long explanation of a cool story. Sorry bout my longwinded-ness there

  5. What a neat doll! I certainly understand your desire to have a girl: I had the same thing. And boy names? Boring, if you ask me. Still, my boy loves stuffed animals and some dolls, so I'd say you've got a great gender neutral toy there!

  13. My Mom also wanted to wait to find out our genders, but my Dad found out in advance! I haven't decided what I want to do someday yet... the idea of waiting sounds so exciting, but the idea of a gender reveal party also sounds like so much fun :)

  15. That doll is just the prettiest thing ever! (Might have to make one myself sometime). My husbands family are all boys and the third grandson was my Luca. Then followed by three granddaughters. You just never know! Fascinating subject, but in the end all chance. I'm thinking your doll could be for a boy or girl!
